I want to paint my car my friend has all the equipment needed I just want to know if y=the paint on it now is already good do we need to sand it back or can you just paint over it? there arnt any dents I just want it to be a different colour? What to do if I want to get my car painted?
You will need to sand it back otherwise there is no way that your new paint will stick. What to do if I want to get my car painted?
The finished product is only as good as the preparation. The vehicle must have any waxes, oil film, tar etc removed. The paint surface also has to be etched with at least 400 grade wet and dry sandpaper, and then a final rub of 800-1200 grade to remove minor scratches. If the colour changes are totally different spectrum's of colour, its probably recommended the car be undercoated as well, so the colours don't interfere with each other. The spraying of the colour is the easy part, the preparation will make or break he finish.
Don't start it unless your prepared to it right, or you will be sorry with the result.
If you have to ask better leave it to the pro's.
You have to rough up the surface a bit or the new paint won't stick. Not necessarily back to bare metal, just take off the shine. Also make sure your new paint is compatible with the existing, as they sometimes react if you mix different types.
hello
no you can not just spray the paint on!
a few steps first my friend
firstly give your car a really good wash and i mean good!
make sure it is dry and i mean dry before you do anything else, tip use air blower to blow all water from all the nooks and places the water might lay! believe me if you dont it will come back and haunt you!!!!!!!
when you sure its 100% dry mask the car up (the bits you dont want the paint???) quick tip for betta finish.... carefully lift the windscreen rubber and push some thick ish string between the rubber and the body just enough to lift the rubber from the body work, then mask, this will give you a much cleaner edge when you pull the masking off and looks far beta.now you need key (etching) all the old paintwork carefully so you dont go to far an expose the metal work. (bad news) again blow the whole car off with air blower.(wear safety gear goggles etc) now you need to degrease the whole car! (bodyshop surpply diy) and tack cloth it (gets little dust particals of etc) now try not to touch the prepared area (whole car) another tip before spraying carefully pour water on the floor to keep dust down dont splash your prepared area! goodluck and make sure you have compatible paint!
hope that helps,
