What do I need to paint my car?

Saturn 1992, white to blackWhat do I need to paint my car?
I have been in the auto collision painting business for 16 years and currently work for DuPont Automotive Finishes.

Your Saturn probably has basecoat/ clearcoat on it, so you should repaint it with basecoat/ Clearcoat. However, since you are repainting with a solid color, you could choose the option of painting it with a single-stage urethane enamel. The single-stage paint job will cost less in materials and labor to apply.

However, if you have never painted a car before, then I don't suggest that you begin unless you are considering the painting of cars a serious hobby or side-line work. The equipment alone will cost more than it would to simply have a local body shop or production shop (Maaco)paint your car. In addition, most autopainting materials are very hazardous and should only be used and handled by proffessionals.

Before you repaint your car yourself or by a proffesional, you should ask yourself the following questions:

1. Is the value of the car worth the money and labor to re-paint? (Will the paint job out-live the car? Most urethane-enamel paint jobs will last at least 3 - 5 years, sometimes longer, depending on if the paint is protected and maintained.

2. Does the car have extensive body work that needs repair prior to painting? You don't want to paint shiny black over dings and scratches. A high-gloss black shows every blemish and imperfection. If your vehicle does need some body repair, the body repairs alone could be quite expensive.

3. How much are you willing to spend? What is your budget? Car refinishing is just like any other product or service; it comes in all flavors and sizes. You can get a cheap synthetic-enamel paint job for little money, but it won't last very long, especially in areas that have lots of sunlight like the Southeastern or Southwestern U.S. You can also get a first-class, urethane basecoat/ clearcoat paint job with a lifetime warranty, but it won't be cheap. The bottom line is that you get what you pay for.

I suggest that you visit the DuPont Performance Coatings website: www.performancecoatings.dupont.com. It contains a wealth of product and industry information. I also suggest that you refinish your Saturn with DuPont's Nason Fulthane basecoat/ clearcoat or Fulthane single-stage. Nason is an economy paint that is high-quality, but won't break the bank. Many production shops, such as Maacos use DuPont Nason for overall paint jobs. What do I need to paint my car?
